Maddie’s Musings | May ‘26
Last month we were discussing the power or a vibe and how difficult some things in hospitality are to write down.
It’s not the standards or procedures, but the feeling of a place. The instinct to care, to notice, to go a little further than expected. At The Cotley Inn, we found ourselves coming back to a simple phrase:
‘The Cotley way’.
It started naturally, in day-to-day moments, recognising when something had been done just right. Over time, it became shorthand. A shared understanding that didn’t need explaining.
So what is the ‘The Cotley Way’?
It’s not a checklist. It’s a way of thinking. Warm without being forced, proud without being precious, looking after guests like they’re in your own home and supporting each other without being asked.
More than anything, it gave us a shared language, something that helped guide decisions, shape behaviour, and quietly set the standard for what excellence looks like across our business.
As we’ve grown into The Candlelight Inn, that way of thinking has come with us.
Not to be copied, but to guide.
At The Candlelight, it shows up in its own way, shaped by a new team and setting, but grounded in the same principles: genuine hospitality, attention to detail, and a space that feels welcoming and real.
Both The Cotley and The Candlelight way are shaped by a simple idea: “so what else?”
Of course, it’s easy to apply this to the customer experience, that’s the visible part. What more can we do at the table, at the bar, in those moments guests see and feel? That’s the obvious place to start.
But for us, it goes further than that.
We encourage our teams to look beyond the customer-facing moments and ask what else can be done behind the scenes. How can we better support our colleagues? What more can we do to strengthen relationships with our suppliers?
Often, it’s found in the small, everyday actions: helping the butcher unload the van, stacking crates neatly for collection, or pulling the bins out on the right day without being asked.
Why It Matters?
Because for us, excellence starts where nobody can see it.
