Maddie’s Musings | August ‘26

With everything happening in the world, life feels busy, expensive and, at times, a little overwhelming. It would be easy to assume that people are going out less because of that. But I don't actually think that's what we're seeing.

Instead, I think people are becoming much more intentional.

When someone chooses to spend an evening with us, they're not just buying dinner or a drink. They're choosing to spend some of their most valuable commodity—time. Time with family. Time catching up with friends. Time celebrating, escaping, reconnecting or simply switching off for a couple of hours.

That means the little things matter more than ever.

A genuine welcome. Remembering someone's favourite table. A perfectly poured pint. A smile that isn't rehearsed. Food that feels thoughtful rather than complicated. These are the moments people remember long after they've forgotten what they ordered.

It's easy in hospitality to get caught up chasing the next idea, the next trend or the next big event. While those things all have their place, I'm constantly reminded that what people really crave is authenticity. They want to feel looked after by people who genuinely care.

That's something I think both The Cotley Inn and The Candlelight Inn do incredibly well. Whether it's a quick pint after work, Sunday lunch with three generations of a family or a special celebration, our aim has never been to be the fanciest room in Somerset. It's to create places where people feel comfortable enough to come back again and again.

As we head into our busiest part of the summer, I'd like to say thank you to our teams, who continue to show incredible care even on the busiest days, and to our guests, who choose to spend their time with us.

We never take that for granted.
